Holstein in 1648

This specimen was lot 1294 in Ponterio sale 173 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $441. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp. Taler, 1626. PCGS Genuine--Cleaning, EF Details Secure Holder. Friedrich III (1616-59). Darkly toned." The dynastic affairs of this duchy are complicated even by German standards as the dukes were related to the king of Denmark and even the czar of Russia. Most coin issues are rare. This one minted 1622-26 is only scarce. Another thaler (Dav-3699) exists with "HOLSATI:" in the obverse legend.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM 64 (formerly KM-27); Dav-3698.
