Holstein in 1648

The first specimen was lot 4415 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabruck, March 2024), where it sold for €750 (about US$984 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HOLSTEIN-GOTTORP, HERZOGTUM, Friedrich III. 1616-1659. Reichstaler 1627, Steinbek. Münzmeister Samuel Timpf. Mit HOLSAT: am Ende der Vorderseitenumschrift. Hübsche Patina, fast vorzüglich. (duchy of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp, Frederick III, 1616-59, thaler of 1627, Steinbek mint, with "HOLSAT:" at the end of the obverse legend. Handsome patina, about extremely fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 11489 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for €240 (about US$250). The catalog description[2] noted, "GERMANY. Taler, 1627 - ST. Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp. Frederik III. NGC EF Details--Mount Removed. From the L. E. Bruun Collection." The dynastic affairs of this duchy were complicated even by German standards as the dukes were related to the king of Denmark and even the czar of Russia. Most coin issues are rare. This one minted 1626-28 is only scarce. Another thaler (Dav-3698) exists with "HOLSA:" in the obverse legend. Frederik III (b. 1597) was duke 1616-59. He favored Sweden in an attempt to avoid Danish domination and his daughter Hedwig Eleonora became queen of Sweden. Other daughters married into Mecklenburg-Gustrow, Baden-Durlach, Hesse-Darmstadt and Anhalt-Zerbst.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, the first specimen 28.77 g, the second specimen 28.34 g.
