Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp 1626-ST thaler Dav-3699
This specimen was lot 1333 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €280 (about US$377 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN, HOLSTEIN-GOTTORP, HERZOGTUM, Friedrich III. 1616-1659. Reichstaler 1626, Schleswig. Münzmeister Samuel Timpf. Mit HOLSATI: am Ende der Vorderseitenumschrift und abgekürzter Jahreszahl 626. Zainende, sehr schön +. (Germany, duchy of Holstein-Gottorp, Frederick III, 1616-59, thaler of 1626, Schleswig mint, with "HOLSATI:" at the end of the obverse legend. Clipped, very fine.)"
The dynastic affairs of this duchy were complicated even by German standards as the dukes were related to the king of Denmark and even the czar of Russia. Most coin issues are rare. This one minted 1626-28 is only scarce. Another thaler (Dav-3698) exists with "HOLSA:" in the obverse legend.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
