Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp (16)19 1/16 thaler
This specimen was lot 960 in Stephen Album internet sale 28 (Santa Rosa, CA, July 2024), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN-GOTTORP: Friedrich III, 1616-1659, AR 1/16 thaler, 1619, an attractive example, PCGS graded MS62." The dynastic affairs of this duchy are complicated even by German standards as the dukes were related to the king of Denmark and even the czar of Russia. Friedrich III favored Sweden in an attempt to avoid Danish domination and his daughter Hedwig Eleonora became queen of Sweden. Other daughters married into Mecklenburg-Gustrow, Baden-Durlach, Hesse-Darmstadt and Anhalt-Zerbst. This type was struck 1617 and 1619.
