Künker sale 335, lot 4375

This specimen was lot 4375 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabruck, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €2,400 (about US$3,141 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN, HOLSTEIN-GOTTORP, HERZOGTUM, Johann Adolf, 1590-1616. 1/2 Reichstaler 1612 (?, die letzten beiden Ziffern der Jahreszahl sind undeutlich), Schleswig. Von großer Seltenheit. Schrötlingsfehler im Randbereich, sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp, John Adolf, 1590-1616, half thaler of 1612 (last two digits of the date are illegible), Schleswig mint. Very rare, planchet defects on the rim, very fine.)"

This rare type was struck 1609, 1611-12 and accompanied a thaler (Dav-3688). The dynastic affairs of this duchy are complicated even by German standards as the dukes were related to the king of Denmark and even the czar of Russia. Most coin issues are rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 14.18 g.
