Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp 1624-ST 1/96 thaler
This specimen was lot 11202 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Copenhagen, June 2026), where it sold for €129 (about US$149). The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp. 1/96 Taler, 1624. Schleswig Mint. Friedrich III. NGC VF Details--Bent. Mint Error. Error in the denomination reading '69' instead of '96'. From the L.E. Bruun Collection." The dukes of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp were a cadet branch of the house of Oldenburg, which ruled Denmark. They divided the rule of Schleswig-Holstein between them and the history of the duchies is the story of their quarrels and feuds. Friedrich III favored Sweden in an attempt to avoid Danish domination and his daughter Hedwig Eleonora became queen of Sweden. Other daughters married into Mecklenburg-Gustrow, Baden-Durlach, Hesse-Darmstadt and Anhalt-Zerbst. This type was struck 1621 and 1624. It is not rare. The "ST" monogram is just before the date on the reverse.
