Künker sale 400, lot 228

This specimen was lot 228 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €6,000 (about US$7,784 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN, KURFÜRSTENTUM, Friedrich August III. (I.), 1763-1806-1827. Dukat 1806, SGH. GOLD. Prachtexemplar. Fast Stempelglanz. (Germany, electorate of Saxony, Frederick Augustus III, ducat of 1806. Choice example, about uncirculated.)"

This type was struck 1804-06 and is the last ducat of the electorate of Saxony. In 1806, the Holy Roman Empire was abolished and Frederick Augustus was promoted to king by Napoleon, prompting all the coinage to be redesigned. After Waterloo, the king was stripped of half his lands at the Congress of Vienna but was permitted to keep his title.
