Künker sale 264, lot 3813

This specimen was lot 3814 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €12,000 (about US$15,502 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN, KURFÜRSTENTUM Friedrich August III. (I.), 1763-1806-1827. 10 Taler (Doppelter August d'or) 1779, Dresden. Geharnischtes Brustbild r. mit umgelegtem Mantel und Ordensband//Zwei aneinandergelehnte, lorbeerumwundene Wappenschilde, darüber Kurhut, unten die Signatur I . E . C . (Johann Ernst Croll, Münzmeister in Dresden 1779-1804). GOLD. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Germany, electorate of Saxony, Frederick Augustus III, 1763-1827, ten thaler of 1779, Dresden mint. Obverse: armored and mantled bust to right; reverse: two inclined oval shields, laurel wreaths around, ducal hat above, signature below. Very rare in this quality, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

The elector of Saxony consistently stood as an ally of Napoleon during his invasions of Germany, for which he was promoted to king in 1806. After Napoleon's fall, Saxony was punished by having half her territory annexed to Prussia but Frederick Augustus kept his new title. This type is listed for 1791-1806 and despite the steady production, is rare. A second type (Fr-2882, with Friedrich Augustus as king) is also known for 1806. The denomination was terminated in 1854. This coin was also called a double august d'or and was equal to a Prussian double friedrichs d'or.

Record mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.36 g, 0.902 fine gold, this specimen 13.31 g.
