Saxony 1795-IEC thaler Dav-2703
This specimen was lot 820 in Jean Elsen list 269 (Brussels, July-August 2014), where it was offered for €750 (about US$1,020). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ALLEMAGNE, SAXE, Friedrich August III (1763-1806), AR Ausbeutetaler, 1795, Dresde. Nettoyé. presque Superbe (electorate of Saxony, Frederick August III (1763-1806), silver mining thaler of 1795, Dresden mint. Cleaned, about extremely fine.)"
The elector of Saxony consistently stood as an ally of Napoleon during his invasions of Germany, for which he was promoted to king in 1806. After Napoleon's fall, Saxony was punished by having half her territory annexed to Prussia but Frederick Augustus kept his new title. This type is listed for 1794-1806 and is accompanied by a regular thaler (Dav-2701).
Recorded mintage: unknown but about two and a half times the price of the regular thaler.
