Bamberg 1795 thaler Dav-1939
This specimen was lot 560 in Sincona sale 6 (Zürich, May 2012), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Bamberg, Bistum Franz Ludwig von Erthal, 1779-1795. Konventionstaler 1795. Gekröntes Wappen auf gekröntem Wappenmantel. Rv. In Lorbeergirlande drei Zeilen Schrift. Min. Rdf. Vorzüglich-sehr schön. (Bishopric of Bamberg, Francis Louis of Erthal, 1779-95, convention thaler of 1795. Obverse: crowned arms, crowned mantle behind; reverse: three line inscription in a laurel wreath. A few flaws, very fine to extremely fine.)"
Franz Ludwig von Erthal was also bishop of Wurzburg. This type was struck in 1795 as a "contribution thaler" to pay a ransom demanded by an occupying French army. The bishopric was secularized in 1801 and annexed to Bavaria in 1802.
