Bamberg 1795 ducat Fr-174
This specimen was lot 3932 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €1,700 (about US$2,231 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BAMBERG, BISTUM, Christoph Franz von Buseck, 1795-1802. Dukat 1795, Nürnberg, auf die Huldigung der Stadt Bamberg. GOLD. Feiner Prägeglanz, üblicher Stempelfehler am Rand, min. gewellt, vorzüglich +. (Germany, bishopric of Bamberg, Christopher Francis of Buseck, 1795-1802, ducat of 1802, Nuremberg mint, on the homage of the city of Bamberg. Fine mint luster, die cud on rim, slightly wavy, choice extremely fine.)"
All of the gold of this ecclesiastical state is rare. Of the seven bishops who ruled Bamberg in the eighteenth century, three were also bishops of neighboring Wurzburg. The bishopric was secularized in 1801 and annexed to Bavaria in 1802. Christoph Franz was the last prince-bishop of Bamberg.
