This specimen was lot 74526 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $432. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Bamberg. 3 Kreuzer, 1795. Christoph Franz. PCGS MS-65. Struck to commemorate the death of Franz Ludwig. Extremely reflective fields augmented by champagne peripheral toning. The top-graded example at PCGS." Franz Ludwig von Erthal was also bishop of Würzburg. This type was struck in 1795 to commemorate his death. A French army was occupying the bishopric at the time and thalers were struck to bribe them to leave. The bishopric was secularized in 1801 and annexed to Bavaria in 1802.
