Wurzburg 1785-MP thaler Dav-2905
This specimen was lot 40573 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $822.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Wurzburg. Taler, 1785-MP. NGC MS-61. Franz Ludwig von Ernthal (1779-95). From the Demarete Collection." This type is listed in the SCWC as a one year type but is actually fairly available. The bishopric of Würzburg was an ecclesiastical state north of Bavaria and south of Thuringia whose rulers issued thalers fairly steadily during the eighteenth century. Franz Ludwig von Ernthal was also bishop of Bamberg. The bishopric was secularized in 1803 and given to Bavaria by Napoleon, of which region it is still a part.
