This specimen was lot 1635 in Stephen Album sale 38 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "WÜRZBURG: Franz Ludwig von Erthal, 1779-1795, AR 20 kreuzer, 1785, initials RF MP, some central adjustment marks, lustrous, EF to About Unc." This type was struck 1785-87 and 1790. The bishopric of Würzburg was an ecclesiastical state north of Bavaria and south of Thuringia whose rulers issued thalers fairly steadily during the eighteenth century. Franz Ludwig von Erthal was also bishop of Bamberg. The bishopric was secularized in 1803 and given to Bavaria by Napoleon, of which region it is still a part.

Recorded mintage: unknown but fairly common.
