Saxony 1770-EDC 2/3 thaler
This specimen was lot 31144 in Heritage sale 3105 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $1,920. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Saxony. Friedrich August III 2/3 Taler (Gulden) 1770-EDC MS66 NGC, Dresden mint. A thrilling and ultimately superior rendition of this fractional Taler, boasting the notable and regal portrait of Friedrich August III. Punctuated by a wood-grain tone likely having developed as a result of long-term storage that ultimately does little to restrain the resounding mint brilliance. Seldom-seen in this quality and the finest at NGC by sixteen grade-points. From the Cape Coral Collection, Part II." This gulden was marked as a 2/3 thaler but weighed only a half thaler. It was struck 1768-88 and is fairly common.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
