This specimen was lot 40568 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $7,050. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. Taler, 1770-EDC. NGC MS-66. Friedrich Wilhelm III (1763-1827). Highly lustrous, somewhat prooflike and very attractive, a sharply struck superb gem. From the Demarete Collection." This type is listed in the SCWC for 1769-79 and is common in grades up to extremely fine. It was struck simultaneously with a mining thaler (Dav-2691). Friedrich August III did not pursue the Polish adventures of his ancestors and prosperity began to return to Saxony.
