This specimen was lot 40566 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $1,955. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. Taler, 1767-EDC. NGC MS-63. Friedrich Wilhelm III (1763-1827). Lightly toned and very attractive. Demarete Collection." Most Saxon thalers of the period 1660-1760 are scarce. The elector Friedrich August II's attempt to conquer and rule Poland as well as Saxony impoverished both countries. After a brief reign of Friedrich Christian, Friedrich August III ascended to the electorate under the regency of Xavier (1763-68). This type is listed in the SCWC for 1764-68 but Dav-2682 is more common for 1767.
