Ponterio sale 169, lot 10289

This specimen was lot 10289 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $411. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Baden-Durlach. Taler, 1767. Karl Friedrich (1738-1811). Toned. NGC EF-45." Most of the thalers of Baden prior to the Napoleonic period are scarce. This type was issued 1766-68 and 1772 and was accompanied by a half thaler (KM 116). The Margrave of Baden became a firm ally of Napoleon and was rewarded with substantial slices of territory during the mediations of 1803-05 which divided up all the petty states. The margrave was then promoted to grand duke.
