Baden 1767-S W 1/2 thaler
This specimen was lot 1297 in Sincona sale 47 (Zürich, May 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"GERMANY, Baden-Durlach, Markgrafschaft, Karl Friedrich, 1746-1811. 1/2 Konventionstaler 1767, Durlach. Vorzüglich. Feine Patina. (margraviate of Baden-Durlach, Charles Frederick, 1746-1811, half convention thaler of 1767, Durlach mint. Extremely fine, Nicely toned.)"
This type is listed for 1766-68, all with small mintages. It accompanied a thaler (Dav-1934). Most of the coinage of Baden prior to the Napoleonic period is scarce. The Margrave of Baden became a firm ally of Napoleon and was rewarded with substantial slices of territory during the mediations of 1803-05 which divided up all the petty states. The margrave was then promoted to grand duke.
