Saxony 1717-IGS 2/3 thaler KM-826
This specimen was lot 20628 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. 2/3 Taler, 1717-IGS. Dresden Mint. Friedrich August I (1694-1733). NGC EF-45. Commemorative of the death of Princess Anna Sophie. Issued under Friedrich August I, King of Poland, and thus sought by collectors of both countries. A particularly collectible issue due to the impressively engraved ship at sea motif." This type of 1717 is rare. It was accompanied by a third thaler (KM 825) and a single thaler (KM 828). The exhaustion of the fighting in Poland rendered the Saxon state prostrate, and most of the thalers of this period are rare. Prosperity (and high mintages) would not return until the reign of Friedrich August III (1763-1806).
Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.
Specification: silver.
