Künker sale 263, lot 1213

This specimen was lot 1213 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €3,200 (about US$4,134 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN, KURFÜRSTENTUM Friedrich August I. 1694-1733 (August der Starke). Reichstaler 1717, Dresden, auf den Tod seiner Mutter Anna Sophia von Dänemark. Sehr attraktives Exemplar mit herrlicher Patina, vorzüglich +. (Germany, Electorate of Saxony, Frederick August I, 1694-1733 (Augustus the Strong), thaler of 1717, Dresden mint, on the death of his mother Anna Sophia of Denmark. Extremely fine or better.)"

This type of 1717 is rare. It was accompanied by half gulden (KM 825) and a gulden (KM-826). The exhaustion of the fighting in Poland rendered the Saxon state prostrate, and most of the thalers of this period are rare. Prosperity (and high mintages) would not return until the reign of Friedrich August III (1763-1806).

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-2658; Schnee 1017, KM 828.
