Saxony 1661-CR thaler Dav-7617
This specimen was lot 31130 in Heritage sale 3105 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $4,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Saxony. Johann Georg II Taler 1661-CR MS66 NGC, Dresden mint. Constantin Rothe mint master. Also known as a hereditary (or Erbländische) Taler. Imbued with an amethyst tinted slate tone, accented by golden highlights, all over an underlying reflective planchet. Struck with crisp precision that renders every detail of the portrait, mantle and hat to appear as though it just left the mint. The sole finest certified. Ex. Teutoburger Münzauktion. From the Cape Coral Collection, Part II." In addition to this type, struck 1658-80, the SCWC notes a thaler struck on quarter thaler dies (Dav-7617A). The similar Dav-7619 has a plumed helmet on the table instead of the electoral cap shown here.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
