Künker Auction 441, lot 4431

This specimen was lot 4431 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €950 (about US$1,307 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN, KURFÜRSTENTUM Johann Georg I., 1615-1656. 1/4 Reichstaler 1640, Dresden. Mit geteilter Jahreszahl auf der Rückseite. Clauß/Kahnt 197. Seltene Variante. Feine Patina, kl. Randfehler, sehr schön. (electorate of Saxony, John George I, 1615-56, quarter thaler of 1640, Dresden mint. With divided date on the reverse, rare variety, fine patina, minor edge defects, very fine.)"

This type was struck 1626-56 and is fairly common. Mintmaster CR (Constantin Rothe) worked at the Dresden mint 1640-78.
