Saxony 1628-HI 4 thaler Dav-LS386
This specimen was lot 4421 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €26,000 (about US$35,768 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SACHSEN, KURFÜRSTENTUM Johann Georg I., 1615-1656. Breiter vierfacher Reichstaler 1628, Dresden. * IOHANN : GEORG : D : G : DVX SAXONIÆ : IVL : CLIV : ET MONTI : Der geharnischte Kurfürst reitet r., mit der Rechten das Schwert schulternd, im Hintergrund Stadtansicht von Dresden//SACRI : ROM : - IMP : ARCHIM : - ET ELECT Sechsfach behelmtes, mehrfeldiges Wappen mit Mittelschild, darunter die geteilte Signatur H - I (Hans Jacob, Münzmeister in Dresden 1624-1635), zu den Seiten die geteilte Jahreszahl 16 - · Z8. Von größter Seltenheit, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Scharf ausgeprägtes Exemplar mit dunkler Patina, leichte Auflagen, vorzüglich. (electorate of Saxony, John George I, 1615-56, quadruple thaler of 1628, Dresden mint. Obverse: the armored and mounted elector rides right with a sword in his hand, city view of Dresden below; reverse: six helmets, manifold arms with escutcheon, mintmaster's initials below dividing the date. Extremely rare, especially in this quality, sharply struck with dark patina, light deposits, extremely fine.)"
This enormous commemorative was struck for an occasion now lost to history, along with a 1½ thaler, double thaler and triple thaler.
