Saxony 1628-HI 3 thaler Dav-LS387
This specimen was lot 4358 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €8,000 (about US$10,497 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SACHSEN, KURFÜRSTENTUM, Johann Georg I. 1615-1656. Breiter dreifacher Reichstaler 1628, Dresden. Der geharnischte Kurfürst reitet r. mit der Rechten das Schwert schulternd, im Hintergrund Stadtansicht von Dresden//Sechsfach behelmtes Wappen mit Mittelschild. Dav-387; Schnee 853; Clauß/Kahnt 134. RR Hübsche Patina, kl. Randfehler, winz. Kratzer, vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 331, Berlin 2020, Nr. 463. (Germany, electorate of Saxony, John George I, 1615-56, broad triple thaler of 1628, Dresden mint. Obverse: the armored elector rides right with a shouldered sword, city view of Dresden behind; reverse: six-helmeted arms with escutcheon. Very rare, handsome patina, small edge bumps, light scratches, extremely fine.)"
This rare type was struck 1627-28 along with other multiple thalers, including a quadruple thaler (Dav-LS386). Another triple thaler of 1628 (Dav-7599) was struck using single thaler dies.
