Saxony (1507-25) groschen KM-MB79
This specimen was lot 2853 in Stephen Album sale 41 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2021), where it sold for $66. The catalog description[1] noted, "SAXONY: Friedrich III, Johann, and Georg, 1507-1525, AR zinsgroschen, ND, helmeted coat of arms with FRI IO GE D G DVCES SAX around // helmeted arms of Saxony with +GROSSVS nOVVS DVCVm SAX around, somewhat rough borders and somewhat uneven strike, EF." Joint coinages were frequent during the early stages of the division between the Ernestine and Albertine dukes; the Ernestine branch splintered after 1554 into the Saxon duchies. This type was struck at Annaberg (cross mintmark, shown here), Buchholz, Freiberg, Schneeberg and Leipzig. It is common. At this time, the groschen was three kreuzer or 1/20 of a thaler.
