Sincona sale 38, lot 1225

This specimen was lot 1225 in Sincona sale 38 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 2,600 CHF (about US$3,118 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Sachsen, Herzogtum, Friedrich III., Johann und Georg, 1507-1525 Goldgulden o. J. Leipzig. Sehr selten. Sehr schön. Schrötlingsfehler. (Germany, duchy of Saxony, Frederick III, John and George, 1507-25, undated goldgulden. Very rare, Very fine, Planchet defect.)"

Saxony, one of the larger divisions of Germany and blessed with numerous silver mines, issued large numbers of thalers. Gold, however, is not so common. This rare type was issued by the Ernestine branch, not the Albertine branch.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.25 g.

Catalog reference: Keilitz 40, Fr-2930.
