Saxony (1508-25) thaler Dav-9709A
The first specimen was lot 4217 in Goldberg sale 75 (Los Angeles, September 2013), where it sold for $1,323. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States - Saxony. Klappmutzentaler, ND. Friedrich, Johann, Georg, 1508-1525. Bust right. Reverse: Facing busts. Mount removed at top and tooling in fields. Nice detail on busts. NGC graded About Uncirculated, Details (Surface Hairlines)." The second specimen was lot 72445 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[2] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony (Ernestine line). Taler, ND (1507-25). Annaberg Mint. Friedrich III, with Johann & Georg. NGC VF Details--Mount Removed. Despite its prior use as a jewelry piece though mounting and some polishing, this piece stands as a great representative of a taler from the first quarter of the 16th century."Saxony, one of the larger divisions of Germany and blessed with numerous silver mines, issued large numbers of thalers. Davenport notes that this issue came from four mints without noting what are the mintmarks. Dav-9709A is the large letters variety. This came from the Ernestine branch, not the Albertine branch.
