Saxe-Weimar 1654 thaler Dav-7545
This specimen was lot 712 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $9,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxe-Weimar. Taler, 1654. Wilhelm IV (1640-62). NGC MS-63. VERY RARE. Commemorative Taler struck to celebrate the assumption of the Rectorship of Jena University by Duke Bernhard of Saxe-Weimar. Exquisite in its detail and execution of double interlocking hearts, with legends running their entire length and the three small busts at their center. Old envelope toning throughout, which does not obscure the luster still visible along the devices and in the more protected areas. There is a small planchet flaw near the top of the outer heart which is faint but visible on either side, as well as a very light surface mark near the bust of Johann Friedrich. Overall an exceptional piece which will greatly enhance any collection. From the Rockaway Collection." When Saxe-Middle-Weimar lapsed in 1640, a new Saxe-Weimar was created which lasted until World War One. When Saxe-Eisenach lapsed in 1741, it was added and the new polity was called Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach.
