Sincona sale 73, lot 1173

This specimen was lot 1173 in Sincona sale 73 (Zürich, November 2021), where it sold for 3,600 CHF (about US$4,632 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND | Sachsen-Weimar, Herzogtum. Wilhelm IV. 1640-1662. 1/2 Dukat 1654, Weimar. Selten. Vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Weimar, William IV, 1640-62, half ducat of 1654, Weimar mint. Rare, Extremely fine.)"

The duchy of Saxe-Weimar, first erected around 1565 with the breakup of Ernestine Saxony, went thru several extinctions and creations, "Old", "Middle" and "New". It became Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach when the duke added Eisenach to his domain and the state survived until the end of World War One. This is a one year type.
