Sincona Auction 103, lot 401

This specimen was lot 401 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), where it sold for 2,625 CHF (about US$4,001 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Sachsen-Weimar, Herzogtum, Wilhelm IV. 1640-1662. Taler 1655, Weimar. Auf die feierliche Überführung der Gebeine seines Bruders, des 1639 in Neuenburg gestorbenen Herzogs Bernhard, aus der provisorischen Ruhestätte im Breisacher Münster nach Weimar. Sehr selten. Vorzüglich. Felder im Stempel bearbeitet. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Weimar, William IV, 1640-62, thaler of 1655, Weimar mint. On the ceremonial transfer of the remains of his brother—Duke Bernhard, who died in Neuchâtel in 1639—from their provisional resting place in the Breisach Minster to Weimar. Very rare, Extremely Fine, Dies tooled.)"

When Saxe-Middle-Weimar lapsed in 1640, a new Saxe-Weimar was created which lasted until World War One. Wilhelm IV was the last of the eight brothers who founded the state. When Saxe-Eisenach lapsed in 1741, it was added and the new polity was called Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach.
