Stack's Bowers 2022 NYINC sale, lot 7066

This specimen was lot 7066 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxe-Neu-Weimar. 1/2 Ducat, 1652. PCGS Genuine--Mount Removed, AU Details. Struck to commemorate the building of a new castle. Silky satin like luster throughout with only minimal handling being displayed. Overall a charming piece that will find a good place in the next collection it enters." The duchy of Saxe-Weimar, first erected around 1565 with the breakup of Ernestine Saxony, went thru several extinctions and creations, "Old", "Middle" and "New". It became Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach when the duke added Eisenach to his domain and the state survived until the end of World War One. This commemorative was struck 1651-52.
