This specimen was lot 20421 in Ponterio sale 161 (Chicago, August 2011), where it sold for $4,887.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxe-Saalfeld. Taler, 1717. Johann Ernst VIII (1680-1729). Bicentennial of the Reformation Commemorative. Attractive, multicolored peripheral toning, lustrous surfaces. Choice condition for this issue. NGC MS-64." The SCWC records three different thalers for this date, Dav-2738, Dav-2738A and Dav-2739, with a common reverse but different busts on the obverse. All are rare.
