Mecklenburg-Strelitz 1717-JCA thaler Dav-2445
This specimen was lot 33543 in Heritage sale 3114 (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $6,600. The lot description[1] noted, "German States: Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Adolf Friedrich III Taler 1717 AU55 NGC, Lubeck mint. A beautiful and fleeting Reformation anniversary commemorative issue, featuring a powerful scene of Jerusalem on the reverse. This choice AU example displays only the faintest of rub on the design high-points and the surfaces have toned delightfully in a distinguished cabinet. Though appearing occasionally for auction in Europe, this is the first of the type we will have brought to auction. An especially attractive offering for a Taler specialist seeking a choice example of the emission to bolster their collection. Ex. Kunker Auction 147 (February 2009, lot 438). From the All Original German Taler Collection." This thaler is one of three issued by the duke for the bicentennial of the Reformation: Dav-2444, Dav-2445 (shown here) and Dav-2446. All are rare. The SCWC places them in the Unusual World Coins, perhaps believing them to be medals. Several other states marked this event with coinage, see the links below.
