This specimen was lot 40546 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxe-Saalfeld. Taler, 1720. Saalfeld Mint. NGC MS-62. Johann Ernst VIII (1680-1729). Nicely toned." This type was issued 1720-24 and, like all thalers of this principality, is rare. The half thalers are more available but less sought after. Saxe-Saalfeld became Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld in 1735 and the dukes ruled this state until another reshuffle in 1826.
