Saxe-Saalfeld 1722-IME thaler Dav-2744
This specimen was lot 393 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), where it sold for 4,500 CHF (about US$6,858 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld, Herzogtum, Johann Ernst VIII. 1680-1729. Taler 1722, Saalfeld. Ausbeute der Saalfelder Gruben. Münzmeister Johann Michael Edler. Stempelschneider Johann Heinrich Wahl. Äusserst selten. Gutes vorzüglich. Hübsche Patina. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, John Ernest VIII, 1680-1729, thaler of 1722, Saalfeld mint, for the Saalfelder mines. Extremely rare, About Uncirculated, Attractively toned.)"
This type was struck in 1722 along with KM 47/Dav-2740 (arms reverse). Saxe-Saalfeld became Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld in 1735 and the dukes ruled this state until another reshuffle in 1826.
