Saxe-Saalfeld 1720 thaler Dav-2743
This specimen was lot 711 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $7,050. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxe-Saalfeld. Taler, 1720. Johann Ernst VIII (1680-1729). NGC MS-64. Well struck with just a bit of flatness to the very highest points, but with good detail to the armor and city view. Toned over lustrous metal with strong colored highlights of orange, red and blue in the legend. An exceptional example of this RARE issue. From the Rockaway Collection." This type was issued 1720 only and, like all thalers of this principality, is rare. The half thalers are more available but less sought after. The duke acquired Saxe-Coburg in 1735 and added it to his title, become the duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld.
