Sincona sale 11, lot 2454

This specimen was lot 2454 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it sold for 250 CHF (about US$310 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Salzburg, Kurfürstentum Erzherzog Ferdinand, 1803-1806. Konventionstaler 1803. Vorzüglich. (Salzburg, electorate, archduke Ferdinand, convention thaler of 1803, extremely fine.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg, an ecclesiatical state between Austria and Bavaria, was blessed with abundant silver mines. This type, issued in 1803 after Salzburg was secularized and handed over to an Austrian archduke, is fairly scarce.
