Sincona sale 20, lot 3247

This specimen was lot 3247 in Sincona sale 20 (Zürich, October 2014), where it sold for CHF 500 (about US$627 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Konventionstaler 1805. Vorzüglich. (extremely fine.)" The Archbishopric of Salzburg, an ecclesiastical state between Austria and Bavaria, was blessed with abundant silver mines. This type, issued in 1805 after Salzburg was secularized and handed over to an Austrian archduke, is fairly scarce. A thaler from 1806 is the last issue from this locale.
