Künker sale 384, part of lot 3242

This specimen was part of lot 3242 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), which sold for €280 (about US$362 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Hieronymus von Colloredo, 1772-1803. Ku.-Pfennig Ku.-Pfennig 1775, 1777, 1778, 1779, 1780, 1781, 1783, 1784, 1786, 1789, 1790, 1792 (2x), 1793, 1794, 1795, 1796, 1797, 1798, 1799, 1800, 1801, 1802 (2x). Probszt 2578-2601; Zöttl 3376-3378, 3380-3382, 3384, 3386-3402 (Type 1, Type 2, Type 4 - Type 9). 24 Stück., Schön-vorzüglich. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Hieronymus von Colloredo, 1772-1803, copper pennies of 1775-1802. Twenty-four pieces, fine to extremely fine.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type was struck 1792-1802 and is common. Another pfenning struck in 1802, KM 480, lacked the sprays on both sides. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper.

Catalog reference: KM 474, Probszt 2601; Zöttl 3402.
