Salzburg 1759 thaler Dav-1252
The first specimen was lot 2450 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"Salzburg, Erzbistum Sigismund von Schrattenbach, 1753-1771. Taler 1759. 28.98 g. Zöttl 2973. Probszt 2279. Dav-1252. Min. Schrötlingsf. Fast vorzüglich-vorzüglich. (Salzburg, archbishop Sigismund of Schrattenbach, 1753-71, thaler of 1759, nice extremely fine.)"
The Archbishopric of Salzburg, an ecclesiatical state between Austria and Bavaria, was blessed with abundant silver mines. This type, issued one year only, is fairly common. The second specimen was lot 45706 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2026), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[2] noted, "AUSTRIA. Salzburg. Taler, 1759. Salzburg Mint. Sigmund III. PCGS MS-62."
