Künker sale 293, lot 1765

This first specimen was minted in Salzburg in 1759. It was lot 3629 in Goldberg sale 59 (Beverly Hills, May 2010), where it sold for $373.75. The catalog description[2] noted, "Austria - Salzburg. Taler, 1759. Sigismund III. Bust right. Reverse: Seated saint with small madonna. NGC graded AU-53." The second specimen was lot 1765 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €260 (about US$351 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DIE GEISTLICHKEIT IN DEN HABSBURGISCHEN ERBLANDEN, Sigismund III. von Schrattenbach, 1753-1771. Konv.-Taler 1759. Variante ohne Stempelschneidersignatur unter dem Brustbild der Vorderseite. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Slg. Bernhard Terletzki. Exemplar der Lagerliste Manfred Olding 23, Osnabrück 2002, Nr. 3454. (Austrian church states, Sigismund III of Schrattenbach, 1753-1771, convention thaler of 1759, variety without engraver's initial below bust. Very fine to extremely fine.)"

This type was issued 1759-60 and is fairly common. We also note Dav-1251 and -1252 for 1759. The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1759-60 and is priced about 50% higher than the thalers of Mozart's time.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver, 42 mm diameter.
