Salzburg 1758 thaler Dav-1247
This specimen was lot 1043 in Jean Elsen sale 121 (Brussels, June 2014), where it sold for €300 (about US$481 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SAINT EMPIRE, SALZBOURG, Archevêché, Sigismond III von Schrattenbach (1753-1771), AR Taler, 1758, Droit: B. à droite. Revers: Armoiries. Taches au droit. Très Beau à Superbe. (Germany, archbishopric of Salzburg, Sigismund of Scrattenbach (1753-71), silver thaler of 1758. Obverse: bust right; reverse: arms. Nicks on obverse, very fine to extremely fine.)"
The Archbishopric of Salzburg, an ecclesiastical state between Austria and Bavaria, was blessed with abundant silver mines. This type, issued 1753-61, is common.
