Salzburg 1755 thaler Dav-1247
This specimen was lot 3280 in Künker Auction 426 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €175 (about US$248 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"HABSBURGISCHE ERBLANDE-ÖSTERREICH · DIE GEISTLICHKEIT IN DEN HABSBURGISCHEN ERBLANDEN, SALZBURG, ERZBISTUM, Sigismund III. von Schrattenbach, 1753-1771. Konv.-Taler 1755. R Min. justiert, sehr schön. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Sigismund III von Schrattenbach, 1753-71, convention thaler of 1755. Rare, minor adjustment marks, very fine.)"
The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1753-58 and 1761 and is somewhat scarce.
