This specimen was lot 2890 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €38,000 (about US$49,104 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Max Gandolph von Küenburg, 1668-1687. 4 Dukaten 1682, auf das 1.100jährige Jubiläum des Erzstiftes. In US-Plastikholder der NGC mit der Bewertung MS 62 (6495149-008). GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Sehr attraktives Exemplar mit hübscher Goldpatina, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Max Gandolph of Küenburg, 1668-87, four ducats of 1682, on the 1,100 anniversary of the bishopric. Variety with "EX COM" in the obverse legend and a lion on reverse. Extremely fine to uncirculated.)

Anlässlich des Stiftsjubiläums wurden auch in einer langen Prozession Reliquien getragen, u. a. von den auf der Rückseite dieses 4-Dukatenstückes dargestellten Heiligen Martin, Vinzenz, Hermes sowie Chrysanthus und Daria. Zu diesen Feierlichkeiten wurden neben den Silberstücken einige wenige Goldprägungen ausgegeben. Diese Goldstücke sind alle selten. (On the occasion of the anniversary of the monastery, relics were also carried in a long procession, including Saints Martin, Vincent, Hermes, Chrysanthus and Daria depicted on the reverse of this 4 ducat piece. In addition to the silver pieces, a few gold coins were issued for these celebrations. These gold pieces are all rare.)

In die Regierungszeit des Fürsterzbischofs Max Gandolf von Kuenburg fallen ab 1675 auch die Zauberbubenprozesse, in denen jugendliche Bettler der Hexerei beschuldigt, gefoltert und exekutiert wurden. Im Folgejahr nach dem Jubiläum entsandte der Fürsterzbischof 800 Soldaten sowie weiteres Kriegsmaterial und Geldmittel zum Entsatz der von den Türken belagerten Stadt Wien. (From 1675, during the reign of Prince Archbishop Max Gandolf von Kuenburg, the witchcraft trials also commenced, in which young beggars were accused of witchcraft, tortured and executed. In the year following the anniversary, the Prince Archbishop sent 800 soldiers as well as other war material and funds to relieve the city of Vienna besieged by the Turks.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type was struck in 1682 and commemorated the 1100th anniversary of the bishopric. It was part of a series ranging from fifteen kreuzer up to 12 ducats. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.
