This specimen was lot 22052 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it sold for $587.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. Salzburg. 1/2 Taler, 1682. Archbishop Max Gandolph Graf von Kuenburg (1668-87). NGC MS-62. Commemorating the 1100th Year of the Bishopric. Sharply struck with light attractive toning and strong underlying luster. Quite attractive." The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1682 only and was the first half thaler issued since 1668.
