This specimen was lot 23117 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $1,645. The catalog description[1] noted, "Salzburg. Maximilian Gandolph Taler 1682-PS, MS63 NGC, a choice example with full mint luster and appealing old-time patina, struck to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of the Bishopric. Date in Roman numerals. From The J.G. Collection." The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1682 only and is priced about double the regular issue (Dav-3508).
