Künker sale 384, lot 2674

This specimen was lot 2674 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €11,000 (about US$14,214 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, 1587-1612. Doppelte Dukatenklippe o. J. Geschenkstück. Sechsfeldiges Stifts- und Familienwappen mit Mittelschild, darüber Kardinalshut mit herabhängenden Quasten//Die beiden Stiftsheiligen St. Rudbertus und St. Virgilius sitzen nebeneinander mit Mitra, Salzgefäß und Krummstab, die Köpfe einander zugewandt, davor Dommodell. In US-Plastikholder der NGC mit der Bewertung MS 62 (6495148-003). GOLD. R Attraktives Exemplar, min. gewellt, vorzüglich +. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, 1587-1612, undated klippe double ducat, presentation strike. Obverse: sixfold arms of the state and family with escutcheon under a cardinal's hat with tassels; reverse: SS. Rupert and Virgil seated facing each other with miter, saltcellar and crozier, a model of the cathedral between them. Rare, attractive example, slightly wavy, graded NGC MS-62, choice extremely fine.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This series of silver and gold was struck to commemorate the coronation of the new archbishop. Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.
