Aureo sale 261, lot 764

This specimen was lot 764 in Aureo sale 261 (Barcelona, July 2014), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"s/d. Austria. Salzburgo. Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau (1587-1612). 1 taler. Escasa. EBC-. (Austria, archbishopric of Salzburg, Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau (1587-1612), silver thaler without date. Scarce, about extremely fine.)"

Davenport lists this undated thaler from the first part of Wolf's reign so we assume it was struck prior to 1593 (the first dated thaler from Salzburg). Later thalers of Salzburg are very common. Klippe versions (Dav-8184A) exist.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-8184.
