Salzburg 1587-SR 2 ducat Fr-689
This specimen was lot 2990 in Sincona sale 77 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 2,500 CHF (about US$3,035 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA | Salzburg, Erzbistum. Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, 1587-1612. 2 Dukaten 1587, Salzburg. Mit Titel Rudolphs II. Vorzüglich. Überdurchschnittliche Erhaltung. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, 1587-1612, double ducat of 1587, Salzburg mint, struck in the name of Rudolf II. Extremely fine, Extraordinary condition.)"
The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814. Friedberg lists this type for 1587-97.
